UNIDO launches Standards Compliance Analytics Report for Peru
Vienna, 16 September 2026 – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has launched a new Standards Compliance Analytics report on Peru’s agri-food exports, providing decision-makers with evidence to better target efforts to strengthen market access and compliance. The report highlights encouraging progress: Peru’s agri-food exporters are increasingly demonstrating that they can compete on quality in the world’s most demanding markets. Between 2010 and 2024, border rejections of Peruvian food and feed fell from 105 to 91, even as agricultural exports grew to around US$12.5 billion. The findings offer a clear evidence base for identifying where further action can make the biggest difference.
Based on 15 years of border rejection data from Australia, China, the European Union, Japan and the United States, the report finds that Peru's rejection rates are lower than those of other upper-middle-income countries in all major markets analyzed. It also identifies where attention is needed: hygiene conditions and pesticide residues account for more than half of the reasons for rejection, and rejections in the European Union and China increased in 2024.
By pinpointing which markets, products and compliance issues drive rejections, the analysis helps government institutions, development partners and the private sector make informed decisions and invest limited resources in the capacities that matter most, from pesticide management on farms to testing before shipment.
The report's recommendations focus on three areas: strengthening Peru's quality infrastructure system; enhancing industry compliance, competitiveness and sustainability; and promoting a conducive policy environment and culture for quality. Priorities include a risk-based pesticide residue monitoring plan, stronger and internationally accredited testing laboratories, better coordination among food safety agencies, and early preparation for new market requirements such as the European Union Deforestation Regulation.
The report was developed under the Global Quality and Standards Programme (GQSP), funded by Switzerland through the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
The full report is available for download in English and Spanish.
