From Reconstruction to Global Reach: Ukraine’s Wood Sector Gains a Quality Boost
18 December 2025 - Ukraine’s wood sector is becoming a cornerstone of the country’s green reconstruction and economic recovery, with targeted support from UNIDO under the Global Quality and Standards Programme (GQSP) Ukraine, funded by Switzerland through SECO. By strengthening quality infrastructure, aligning national standards with European norms, and empowering local institutions, the programme has enabled Ukrainian manufacturers to deliver sustainable, high-performing products for rebuilding homes and communities while boosting competitiveness and and export potential.
The initiative focused on critical segments such as wooden windows and children’s furniture—products essential for reconstruction and energy efficiency. Through close collaboration with national institutions and industry partners, GQSP Ukraine has strengthened Ukraine’s quality infrastructure, enabling laboratories, standardization body, and accreditation agency to offer modern, internationally aligned services. It also supported the private sector in increase its compliance capacity, ensuring Ukrainian wood products meet European and global standards, enhancing trust, boosting competitiveness, and supporting future integration with the EU market.
The programme has facilitated the adoption of 18 European-aligned national standards, supported the modernization of conformity assessment services, and promoted digital transformation of standardization for greater stakeholder engagement, with the National Standardization Body. Two state-of-the-art laboratories now operate with upgraded testing capabilities – including advanced tools to measure the thermal performance of wooden windows, a key requirement for energy-efficient reconstruction.
To strengthen industry competitiveness, the GQSP trained over 384 professionals and supported 70 enterprises in meeting international requirements, optimizing production processes, and accessing high-value markets. Specialized training on CE marking and EU regulations positioned Ukrainian manufacturers to participate in reconstruction efforts with greener, higher-performing products.
Beyond technical improvements, GQSP Ukraine prioritized building long-lasting local capacities. By empowering Ukrainian actors—such as business associations, technical institutions, and professional networks—the programme ensured that guidance and services will continue long after the project ends. Strong partnerships with the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine, Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH), NGO FORZA, and leading industry associations were key to embedding knowledge locally and securing sustained benefits for businesses and workers.
These achievements have transformed the wood sector into a driver of green recovery, export growth, and long-term economic resilience, helping Ukraine build a more innovative, sustainable, and competitive economy for years to come.
