Egypt Celebrates World Standards Day 2025, Highlighting the Strategic Role of Standards in Industrial Development through the TIGARA Project

On 24 November 2025, the European Union Delegation to Egypt, the Ministry of Industry, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) celebrated World Standards Day (WSD) 2025 in Cairo. Organized under the European Union-funded TIGARA project and in partnership with the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS), the event brought together senior government officials, development partners, and representatives across Egypt’s industrial and quality infrastructure landscape.

Held under the auspices of Lieutenant General H.E. Kamel Al-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, the celebration emphasized the vital role that standards play in enhancing industrial competitiveness, strengthening consumer protection, and supporting Egypt’s integration into global value chains.

This year’s edition carried special resonance following the election of Dr. Khaled Soufi, Chairman of EOS, as President-elect of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), a milestone marking Egypt’s rising leadership in shaping global standards. Dr. Soufi delivered a keynote speech reflecting on the importance of a modern, internationally aligned National Quality Infrastructure to support Egypt’s sustainable industrial development.

Mr. Patrick Jean Gilabert, UNIDO Representative in Egypt, emphasized: “I dream of seeing Egyptian products compete with global brands in the stores of Paris, Brussels, and Berlin. UNIDO remains committed to working with the European Union and the Government of Egypt to build a system where Egyptian industries—large and small—can meet international expectations and expand their opportunities globally.”

H.E. Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, in his opening speech highlighted that ‘’sustainable industrial development is a cornerstone of building Egypt’s New Republic and supporting its people. Such development cannot be achieved without a robust foundation of standards and quality. The progress we see today across Egyptian industries is not the result of isolated efforts, but the outcome of a clear national vision - embodied in the National Industrial Development Strategy 2025–2030 and the urgent plan to accelerate the transformation of Egypt’s industrial sector.’’

Contributions throughout the event highlighted the increasing importance of standards in enabling industrial resilience, strengthening market access, and aligning national policies with global sustainable development priorities.

The 2025 World Standards Day celebration reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to advancing a modern, internationally aligned quality infrastructure. With continued support from the European Union and technical leadership from UNIDO through the TIGARA project, Egypt is well positioned to further strengthen its institutional capabilities, enhance its competitiveness, and expand its global industrial footprint.
